Nai`a

Spinner Dolphins! A frequent encounter off the coast of Lanai'i. Tail slaps, spinning, bow riding- beautiful.

Kevin and Dana chillin with the dolphins

JAWS

Jaws. The world-famous north shore surf spot that only breaks a few times a year. Last week, I was driving along the coast and noticed a heavy south swell coming in at Ho'okipa Beach, which got me thinking. A few phone calls later, I had not only confirmed that Jaws was going off, but also had confirmed the unmarked turn off from the Hana highway. A half-hour of rather intense off-roading later, Katie, Charlie, Tiff, and I arrived at a small bay.  I will let the pictures speak for themselves, as the experience was indescribable.

Whale season is underway!

The Humpbacks are here!

As they exhale (from their VW bug- sized lungs), the whales vaporize the water that pools on the top of their blowhole, sending it up as much as 15 feet in the air at a rate of 300 mph.

Propeller scars are never a good thing to see. . . .
When the whales expose the underside of their tail fin, called a Fluke-Up Dive, they are usually going down for a deeper dive, with bottom times averaging 15-20 minutes. The underside of the fluke is like a fingerprint, and is a unique way to identify each whale.

And we move yet again. . .

This is truly the final move of my time in Maui. Annie, Katie, and I now live in a cute little apartment right in "downtown" Kihei, overlooking the water.
